The Pérez-Guerrero Trust Fund for South-South Cooperation (PGTF), established in 1983 and managed by UNOSSC on behalf of the Group of 77, is a South-South incubator of science and technology. Co-funded by the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA) and implemented by Thai public institutions, PGTF projects developed in Thailand are proving highly instrumental – these projects are brokering partnerships and enabling impactful collaboration among Thailand and other developing countries on climate change adaptation, including safe, efficient and green transportation.
“The contribution of these PGTF projects is significant. Beyond the modest resources provided, they are a vehicle that enables knowledge acquisition and network-building yielding practical impact that advances Sustainable Development,” said Dima Al-Khatib, UNOSSC Director.
While on mission to Bangkok, the UNOSSC Director visited two PGTF-funded projects: “International Training Course on Adapting to Climate Change: Facing the Consequence” and “Technical Cooperation for Research & Development (R&D) Implementation of Railway Monitoring Technology”.
These projects have facilitated climate change education training that was completed in May 2023, building capacity of 39 participants from Angola, Botswana, China, India, Indonesia, Malawi, Myanmar, Nigeria, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Uganda, and Zambia. Moreover, the ongoing cooperation among Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand on railway inspection research and development is a commendable example of the establishment of a mutual platform for railways monitoring through shared technologies. This is enhancing railway safety and efficiency of operations.
